Digital Labour: How AI Agents Are Reshaping the Enterprise

AIAgentforceDigital Labour

The Shift Has Already Happened

For years, we talked about AI as a tool — something you use to get a task done faster. You type, it responds. You click, it generates. That paradigm is over.

We are now firmly in the era of Digital Labour — where AI systems don't just respond to queries, they act autonomously on behalf of the business.

What Is Digital Labour?

Digital Labour refers to AI agents that carry out multi-step, contextual tasks without constant human input. These aren't chatbots. They:

The difference between a chatbot and a digital worker is agency — the ability to decide, act, and adapt.

Agentforce: Salesforce's Bet on Digital Workers

Salesforce's Agentforce platform is the most mature enterprise deployment of this concept I've worked with. It allows you to deploy autonomous agents that:

The governance layer is what makes it enterprise-ready: LLM guardrails, topic classification, audit trails, and human escalation triggers ensure the agents stay within defined boundaries.

The IT Leader's Role

As IT and AI leaders, our job has shifted. We're no longer just managing infrastructure — we're:

  1. Governing AI behaviour — defining what agents can and cannot do
  2. Curating knowledge — ensuring RAG pipelines surface accurate, current data
  3. Monitoring Digital Labour — just like you'd review a human worker's output

The teams that will win are those who treat their AI agents like employees: onboard them carefully, define their scope, review their work, and improve them over time.

What Comes Next

The next wave is multi-agent orchestration — where multiple specialised agents hand off tasks to each other. An intake agent triage's the request, a retrieval agent pulls context, and an action agent executes. The human reviews the summary.

We're not replacing people. We're giving them leverage.
